Ján Hollý
Ján Hollý (Hungarian János Holi ; born March 24, 1785 in Borský Mikuláš , Slovakia ; † April 14, 1849 in Dobrá Voda , Slovakia) was a Slovak poet and translator . He was the first great Slovak poet to write exclusively in the Slovak language . His predecessors mostly wrote in different versions of the Czech languages , a Slovak, Czech or Latin .
Life
He studied in Skalica , Bratislava and Trnava . He was a Catholic priest in the Madunice parish near Piešťany . Here he also wrote his great works under a large tree that is said to have stood on the site of today's train station and from whose wood the altar of the church in Madunice is said to have been made. He was an active member of the second phase of the national revival of the Slovaks .
Views
He was a patriot who took pride in the historical roots of the Slovak nation. He valued the humanity of the Slovaks, as well as their hardworking nature, the peacefulness and the love and respect for nature.
Work
He wrote poetry and translated the poems of Anton Bernolák into the Slovak language. He used the theme of Sventopluk to wake up the Slovak nation.

In August 2001 the asteroid (19955) Hollý was named after him.
