János Kulka (conductor)

János Kulka (born December 11, 1929 in Budapest , † October 18, 2001 in Stuttgart ) was a Hungarian conductor and composer .

Kulka was educated in Budapest, where he also spent his youth. After his studies, he was a solo coach and later became a conductor at the Budapest State Opera . In 1957 he worked in Vienna and later at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich . At the Württemberg State Opera in Stuttgart he was first conductor and in 1961 at the Hamburg State Opera . From 1964 to 1975 he was general music director in Wuppertal . During this time he conducted as a guest at home and abroad. From 1976 to 1987 he directed the Northwest German Philharmonic and was also Staatskapellmeister in Stuttgart.

After a serious illness, Kulka died in Stuttgart in October 2001.
