Józef Kościelski

Józef Kościelski (born November 9, 1845 in Służewo, Inowraclaw district , † July 22, 1911 in Poznan ) was a Polish politician , poet and playwright .

Life

Józef Kościelski came from a large landowning family. He attended high schools in Poznan and Braunsberg and then studied law in Berlin and Heidelberg . During his studies he headed the Polish Academic Society (Towarzystwo Polskich Akademików) in Berlin. After graduating from 1871 to 1872, he traveled to France , Africa and the Middle East.

After returning home, he initially managed the family estates, was active in literature and was politically active. From 1884 until his resignation on March 9, 1894, he was a member of the Reichstag in the Polish parliamentary group . He was temporarily chairman of his parliamentary group and advocated the moderate equalization policy with Prussia in the Caprivi era . With part of the parliamentary group, he agreed to the naval budget in 1891, the army budget in 1893 and from 1891 to 1893 the trade agreements rejected by the conservatives. He was criticized for this by most of the other Polish MPs and then resigned from his seat. In the same year he affirmed his Polish convictions at the Polentag in Lemberg and spoke of the unity and indivisibility of the Polish nation. Even if he did not call for the restoration of the Polish state, his statements sparked violent negative reactions in parts of the German public.

In 1895 he bought the Miłosław estate, turned to social and cultural activities, supported Polish students in Germany (including Jan Kasprowicz ); In 1899 he founded and directed the Polish Literature and Press Society (Towarzystwo Dziennikarzy i Literatów Polskich). He was involved in numerous trading and industrial companies (among other things, he was chairman of the supervisory board of H. Cegielski AG ).
