Józef Koffler (1931)

Józef Koffler (born November 28, 1896 in Stryj , Austria-Hungary ; died 1944 in Krosno ) was a Polish composer , music teacher and music journalist .

Life

Koffler studied from 1914 to 1916 in Lemberg and from 1918 to 1924 music in Vienna . His teachers were Paul Graener and Felix Weingartner . In 1923 he received his doctorate from Guido Adler with his thesis On orchestral coloristics in the symphonic works of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy . From 1928 to 1941 he taught in Lviv, which had belonged to Poland since 1918 . As a twelve-tone composer at the Lemberg Conservatory, he was given an extraordinary chair for atonal harmony and composition. Roman Haubenstock-Ramati was one of his students from 1937 to 1940 . Koffler was a protagonist of Polish avant-garde music. Koffler also orchestrated, for example the Goldberg Variations by JS Bach for chamber orchestra.

The exact date of death is not certain. In June 1941, the Germans invaded eastern Poland. Koffler and his family were arrested and taken to the Wieliczka ghetto . When the ghetto was dissolved in 1944, Koffler went into hiding, but was found and murdered with his family by a German task force in the Krosno area.

Many of Koffler's works have been lost as a result of the events of World War II.
