József Székely

József Székely (born March 1, 1825 in Debrecen , Hungary , † September 16, 1895 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian writer , poet , journalist and archivist .

Life

József Székely studied at the Protestant College of Debrecen (today university ), completed his law studies in Miskolc and Budapest and graduated as a lawyer in 1847 . As a member of the revolutionary youth movement, he attended the parliamentary session in Pressburg (now Bratislava ) in 1847/48 . After the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution , Székely became a journalist at Pesti Napló ( Journal of Pest ), and from 1855 at the Magyar Sajtó (Hungarian Press) in Vienna . During the ban in 1857/58 he was the assistant editor of the Szépirodalmi Közlöny (Literary Journal) and in 1866 the editor of the daily newspaper Magyar Világ (Hungarian World). He then worked as an archivist for the Pest district.

József Székely wrote a novel and several political brochures. His most important works are: Szeszélydalok (capricious songs, poems; Pest, 1853); Kalárisok ( Chorale , Poems; Pest, 1853), Kossuth fogsága és Pest megye rendei (The Imprisonment of Kossuth and the Officials of Pest County; Budapest, 1895).

József Székely's poems and lyrical works are influenced by the style of Sándor Petőfi and Heinrich Heine .

In 1858 he was elected a member of the Academy , from 1861 he was a member of the Kisfaludy Society .

In his political opinion, Székely was influenced by the views of Ferenc Deáks .

The Hungarian name for Szegedin goulash - Székely gulyás - is said to go back to Székely, "who inspired this excellent dish" - says Károly Gundel .
