Jörn Kubicki

Jörn Kubicki (born October 29, 1965 - March 28, 2020 in Berlin ) was a German neurologist and neurosurgeon . He was the life partner of the politician Klaus Wowereit and one of the first prominent victims of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany .

Life

Jörn Kubicki grew up in Sulzbach in Baden-Württemberg . He began studying medicine at the University of Heidelberg and finished it at the Free University of Berlin . He worked as a doctor in the Neukölln Clinic . Most recently, Kubicki worked as a neurologist at the Charité .

Kubicki became known to the wider public through his partnership with the former mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit. The two met on March 29, 1993 in the Kreuzberg Bar Centrale . After a few weeks they became a couple. Until her death in 1995, they cared for Wowereit's mother together. With the political rise of the then local politician Wowereit to the first openly homosexual head of government in a German federal state, Kubicki, as his partner and their shared private life, repeatedly moved into the reporting of supraregional media.

In public he appeared mainly at benefit events as well as film and theater premieres accompanied by Klaus Wowereit, as well as at the state banquet of Queen Elisabeth II during her visit to Germany in November 2004. Wowereit was the first German politician to present himself with Kubicki as a homosexual Partner in public.

Kubicki was a second cousin of the FDP politician Wolfgang Kubicki .

Kubicki was a heavy smoker and suffered from the lung disease COPD . He died of heart failure in March 2020 at the age of 54 during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
