Jørgen Wæver Johansen

Jørgen Wæver Johansen (born September 21, 1972 in Esbjerg , Denmark ) is a Greenlandic politician ( Siumut ).

Life

Jørgen Wæver Johansen was born in Esbjerg in 1972, where his father Hans Lars trained as a fishing skipper . His mother Nina was only 17 years old when he was born. In 1978 the family moved back to Sisimiut in Greenland . In 1981 they moved on to Attu , his father's home village. Jørgen Wæver Johansen grew up with Danish as his mother tongue and only learned Greenlandic in Attu. He attended the GUX in Aasiaat and then studied economics, history and English at Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific in Victoria . From 1992 he graduated from McGill University in Montreal from a degree in political science, which he dropped out in 1994.

In 1995 Jørgen Wæver Johansen was elected to the board of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference . He was chairman of the Siumut Youth Organization (SIS) and was appointed party secretary of the Siumut in 1996. He took part in the 1998 Folketing election and received 2087 votes, which meant that he missed a seat in the Folketing . In the parliamentary elections in Greenland in 1999 he was first elected to the Inatsisartut . At the age of just 26, he received the second most votes from the Siumut candidates behind Jonathan Motzfeldt . He then resigned as chairman of the SIS and was finally appointed Minister for Social Affairs and Labor in November 1999. In September 2001 he became Minister for Housing and Infrastructure. In the 2002 parliamentary elections , he was re-elected with 580 votes. In 2003 he became Minister for Autonomy, Natural Resources and Justice. He resigned from this office in April 2005. In the 2005 parliamentary elections , he was elected to parliament for the third time in a row and was again appointed Minister for Housing, Infrastructure and Raw Materials. In January 2007 he resigned to become chairman of the corporate company Greenland Venture . In September 2008 he also gave back his parliamentary seat. He resigned from Greenland Venture in January 2010.

It wasn't until 2013 that Jørgen Wæver Johansen made a political comeback when he ran for local elections. Surprisingly, he received the highest number of all candidates in Kujalleq with 297 votes , replacing Simon Simonsen as mayor. In 2014 he became political vice chairman of the Siumut. He did not run for the 2017 local elections. In the same year he also resigned as party vice-president.

He has four children with his wife Vivian Motzfeldt (* 1972), whom he met in 1995.
