The Gailingen Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Gailingen am Hochrhein , a municipality in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg . The cemetery is a protected cultural monument and is located below the Bürglischloss (Genterweg).

history

The Jewish community of Gailingen was able to set up its own cemetery as early as 1650, which became an association cemetery for the Jewish families living in Hegau . The Jews from Randegg (until 1746), Wangen (until 1826) and Worblingen (until 1857/58) as well as partly from Donaueschingen and other places were buried here.

The 157.74 ares large cemetery was expanded several times and the maintenance of the cemetery and the burial of the dead were taken over by the members of the Burial Brotherhood ( Chewra Kadischa ) founded in 1676 . Today there are still 1244 tombstones ( mazewot ) in the cemetery . The oldest tombstone is from 1695 and the last burial took place in 1980.

Since 1948 a memorial stone in the Jewish cemetery has been commemorating the Jewish citizens from Gailingen, who were deported to Gurs concentration camp in 1940 as part of the so-called Wagner-Bürckel campaign and who fell victim to the Shoah .

The cemetery hall ( Taharahaus ) still exists with the memorial plaques for the 16 Jewish soldiers who died in the First World War, which were rescued from the synagogue in 1938 and attached to the outer wall .
