history

The Jewish cemetery in Ellar was laid out at the beginning of the 18th century by the Jewish community ( Kehillah ) in Amt Ellar. The community had members in Ellar as well as in Hausen , Lahr , Waldernbach , Frickhofen and Langendernbach . The center of community life was Ellar.

The cemetery was expanded in 1821 and 1867. The 17.56 ares large cemetery still has 79 tombstones ( Mazewot ) and the last burial took place in 1937.

After the foundation of an independent Jewish community in Frickhofen in 1885, which also included Langendernbach, efforts were made in these places to break away from the cemetery in Ellar. An independent cemetery was inaugurated in Frickhofen in 1913. In 1916, the duty of building maintenance for the Jews in these places for the Ellar cemetery also ended.
