The Offenburg Jewish cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Offenburg in the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg . The cemetery is a protected cultural monument .

Old Jewish Cemetery

As early as the 17th century, a Jewish cemetery of the Jewish community of Offenburg was laid out in the area of ​​today's Freiburger Platz. This cemetery was also used by the Jews from Diersburg and Durbach until their own cemeteries were established .

The last burial took place in 1813. In 1835 the city claimed the property as Allmendplatz and at the end of 1836 the auction took place. Eventually the cemetery was abandoned.

New Jewish cemetery

The new Jewish cemetery was built in 1870 as part of the old municipal cemetery on Moltkestrasse. In the previous decades, the dead of the Jewish community in Offenburg were buried in the Diersburg Jewish cemetery . The new Jewish cemetery in Offenburg was expanded with the municipal cemetery in 1912 and 1925. After 1945 it was still occupied despite the closure of the city cemetery.

The Jewish cemetery has an area of ​​26,672 acres and today there are 284 tombstones . The oldest tombstone is from 1871, the last burial took place in 1942. There are seven tombstones in the new cemetery, presumably from the old cemetery.

There are 45 graves of forced laborers in the cemetery , including many Jews. 41 predominantly Jewish concentration camp prisoners were murdered in Offenburg in April 1945. Several memorial plaques have been placed, including the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust , which was inaugurated on October 23, 1990 .
