Schmieheim Jewish cemetery
The Jewish cemetery Schmieheim is a Jewish cemetery in Schmieheim , a district of the municipality of Kippenheim in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg . The cemetery is a protected cultural monument .
history
The Jewish cemetery in Schmieheim was the largest association cemetery in South Baden . It was created in 1682 on the initiative of the Jewish community in Ettenheim . It is located on the road to Wallburg at the junction to Altdorf . The dead of the following Jewish communities were buried there: Altdorf, Ettenheim , Friesenheim , Kippenheim , Lahr , Nonnenweier , Orschweier and Rust .
The Jewish cemetery has an area of 140.04 acres and today there are 2,491 gravestones ( Mazevot ) left. The oldest tombstone is from 1701, the last burial took place in 1941.
In the cemetery there is a war memorial restored in 1998 for the Jewish soldiers who died in the First World War .
