Jürgen Friedrich (born August 28, 1942 in Cologne ; † August 26, 2018 in Bremen ) was a German computer scientist . He was Professor of Applied Computer Science at the University of Bremen .

biography

After graduating from the Humboldt-Gymnasium in Cologne , Friedrich studied communications engineering from 1962 to 1967 at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen), where he qualified as a Dipl.-Ing. completed. This was followed by studying social sciences and economics at the Free University of Berlin . There he received his doctorate in 1979 on the subject of “Sociology and Cybernetics” under Dieter Claessens and Ivan Bystřina . After working as a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin (1969 to 1975) and the computer science department at the University of Dortmund (1976 to 1986), Jürgen Friedrich accepted a professorship for ›Computer Science and Society‹ in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bremen.

He was a founding member of the Technology Center for Computer Science and Information Technology TZI at the University of Bremen. In 1997 he was appointed chairman of the founding commission for the inter-university international course in digital media. From 2001 to 2012 he was a member of the board of the ›Center for Multimedia in Teaching‹ at the University of Bremen.

After the end of his teaching activities in Bremen, he gave lectures in China - from 2004 as a visiting professor at the Technical University of Guangdong and since 2017 as a visiting professor at the Tongji University in Shanghai.

Friedrich was the driving force and one of the four editors of the first German-language textbook Informatik und Gesellschaft (1995). He was professionally and privately committed to digital media and free knowledge. He was a member of the executive committee of Wikimedia Germany from 2013 to 2016 and has been a Wikipedian in the Bremen community since 2014 .
