Jürgen Huss (born February 8, 1937 ) is a German forest scientist . He was professor for silviculture at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . He is best known for the textbook Grundriß des Waldbau (1987) written together with Peter Burschel .

Live and act

Jürgen Huss studied forest science in Göttingen , Vienna and Edinburgh . In 1964 he was at the forestry faculty of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with the dissertation research on the natural rejuvenation of the beech. The development of the serve after the mast in 1960 to the Dr. forest. PhD . With this work, which primarily pursued ecological issues, he had proven himself to be a specialist in natural regeneration . His results also flowed into the textbook The Natural Rejuvenation of the Beech (1964), written together with Peter Burschel and Reinhard Kalbhenn , which appeared as Volume 34 of the series of publications by the Forestry Faculty of the University of Göttingen and communications from the Lower Saxony Forest Research Institute.

After the clerkship training for the higher forest service in the State Forest Administration of Lower Saxony had entered into with the Great Forest State Examination (2nd state), he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Silviculture of Göttingen Faculty of Forestry. There he completed his habilitation in 1977 with the text Comparative ecological studies on the reactions of young spruce trees to light deprivation and fertilization in the open air and in shading boxes . Huss then moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he took over the latter subject at the chair for silviculture and forest management , while Peter Burschel represented silviculture. Together with him, Huss also wrote the important textbook Grundriß des Waldbau. A guide for study and practice (1987), which can be considered his main work and is a standard work of higher education in this subject. The third edition appeared in 2003. In 1986, Huss accepted the position of successor to emeritus Helmut Schmidt-Vogt at the Silviculture Institute of the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau and headed it in conjunction with the associated chair until his retirement. His successor as a forestry professor was Jürgen Bauhus in 2003 .

Huss' studies on natural beech regeneration were also geared towards practice, but this was in the foreground in his experiments on the regeneration and care of pine and spruce stands . As a result of such strong hurricanes as " Daria ", " Vivian " and " Wiebke " (all 1990) as well as " Lothar " (1999), his scientific attention increasingly focused on the natural and artificial reforestation of areas damaged by storms. Relevant research projects combined basic and applied aspects of silviculture. Thus, even after his retirement, Huss continues to be active in research, evaluates data from long-term experiments, supervises diploma theses and is involved in organizing excursions , especially for groups of foreign students.
