An interview with Jürgen Peters

Jürgen Peters (born March 17, 1944 in Bolko , Upper Silesia Province ) is a German trade union official. From 2003 to 2007 he was chairman of IG Metall .

education

Peters attended primary school in Hanover from 1950 to 1955 and secondary school from 1955 to 1961. From 1961 to 1964 he was trained as a machine fitter at Rheinstahl Hanomag AG in Hanover and attended the advanced vocational school during his apprenticeship. In his first year of training he also joined IG Metall. From 1964 to 1968 he worked as a machine fitter at Rheinstahl Hanomag AG. He then attended the Academy of Labor in Frankfurt am Main from 1968 to 1969 .

Trade unionists

Peters was active as a youth representative at Hanomag and in the IG Metall company youth group. At the level of the Hanover administrative office, he became chairman of the local youth committee of IG Metall Hanover in the mid-1960s, in a fight against his later comrade Hasso Düvel. Peters was involved in educational work and after his time at the Academy of Work worked as a speaker in the youth education center in Usseln . On April 1, 1969, Peters became a teaching assistant at the IG Metall education center in Lohr, where he also worked as a teacher from April 1, 1971. On April 21, 1976 he moved to the board of IG Metall in the Düsseldorf branch. At the trade union day in Hamburg, he rejected the suggestion of some delegates to elect him as a managing board member in 1986. From 1988 to 1998 he was district manager of the Hanover district and from 1998 to 2003 second chairman of IG Metall. Peters was not the preferred candidate of the then First Chairman, Klaus Zwickel , who in turn preferred the cashier Bertin Eichler, for whom, however, a sufficient majority could not be found at the time of nomination. After a power struggle with Berthold Huber , Peters was elected first chairman of IG Metall on August 31, 2003. Huber became his deputy. At the trade union day in 2007, Huber succeeded him in the office of first chairman after Peters had decided not to run again.

Further mandates

On May 1, 2010, Peters resigned from his supervisory board mandate at the automotive group Volkswagen AG . Berthold Huber took over his post . He has also not been a member of the supervisory board of the Salzgitter AG steel group since August 2011.

Political activity

Jürgen Peters is a member of the SPD .
