Trade unionists

Peters was active as a youth representative at Hanomag and in the IG Metall company youth group. At the level of the Hanover administrative office, he became chairman of the local youth committee of IG Metall Hanover in the mid-1960s, in a fight against his later comrade Hasso Düvel. Peters was involved in educational work and after his time at the Academy of Work worked as a speaker in the youth education center in Usseln . Peters was not the preferred candidate of the then First Chairman, Klaus Zwickel , who in turn preferred the cashier Bertin Eichler, for whom, however, a sufficient majority could not be found at the time of nomination. After a power struggle with Berthold Huber , Peters was elected first chairman of IG Metall on August 31, 2003. Huber became his deputy. At the trade union day in 2007, Huber succeeded him in the office of first chairman after Peters had decided not to run again.
