Hans Brümmer

Johannes "Hans" Brümmer (born December 13, 1886 in Tauberbischofsheim , † December 19, 1966 in Oberaichen ) was a German trade unionist and social democratic politician. From 1948 to 1956 he was one of the chairmen of IG Metall .

Empire and November Revolution

Brümmer was the son of a master blacksmith and also learned this trade. In this he worked until 1918. From 1904 he belonged to the free trade unions and in 1906 he joined the SPD . Between 1907 and 1912 Brümmer was chairman of the Mannheim Blacksmiths Association .

During the First World War , Brümmer was a soldier until 1917. In the same year he became a co-founder of the USPD and was chairman of the district board based in Tauberbischofsheim. In 1918 he was called up again for military service. This was a punitive measure because Brümmer helped organize a general strike in Mannheim in January 1918.

During the November Revolution Brümmer was a member of the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council in Karlsruhe . He became a member of the provisional people's government of the Republic of Baden . He was responsible for military affairs.

Weimar Republic and the time of National Socialism

In 1919 he became a councilor in Mannheim and secretary of the German Metalworkers' Association in the Stuttgart district . From the USPD, Brümmer returned to the SPD in 1922. In 1925 Brümmer was elected a member of the Baden state parliament. He resigned the mandate in 1928 when he had become district manager for Baden-Palatinate and Württemberg of the metal workers' association in Mannheim.

In the course of the dissolution of the trade unions by the National Socialists, Brümmer was arrested on May 2, 1933. In 1934 he was sentenced to ten months in prison. In 1938 another trial against him for high treason followed before the Reich Court in Leipzig . The process ended in an acquittal.

Post-war period and Federal Republic

After the liberation, Brümmer was committed to rebuilding the SPD and the unions. In 1946 he was a member of the first state parliament of Württemberg-Baden .

From May 1945 to December 1949 he was a member of the board of the Württemberg-Baden trade unions. He was also chairman of the metal industry association there from 1946 to 1949.

From 1948 to 1956 he was together with Wilhelm Petersen and Walter Freitag chairman of IG Metall, initially for the Bizone and from 1949 for the Federal Republic of Germany . He then retired, but remained unionized.

From 1956 to 1965, Brümmer was a member of the central trade union committee of IG Metall. In addition, he was a long member of the central executive committee of the International Metalworkers' Union and the DGB federal executive committee . Brümmer was also a member of the advisory committee of the coal and steel union .

From 1957 to 1966 Brümmer was a member of the city council in Leinfelden-Echterdingen .
