Jürgen Schuster (born August 31, 1957 ) is a German missionary , theologian , author, lecturer, professor for intercultural theology at the International University of Liebenzell (IHL).

Live and act

From 1976 to 1981, Schuster studied theology at the theological seminar of the Liebenzeller Mission . Between 1981 and 1982 he was in England for English language studies and a short church internship. He then worked for a year in community and youth work in Germany. From 1983 to 1998 he worked as a missionary for the Liebenzeller Mission in the field of church planting and church building in Japan . In 1989 he graduated from Biola University in La Mirada , California , with an MA in Intercultural Studies . From 1991 to 1994 he was a board member of the Japanese Church Association LKKR. In 1996 he was visiting professor at the Pacific Islands Bible College in Chuuk , today's Pacific Islands University in Guam , Micronesia . Between 1997 and 1998 he worked on the theological committee of the Japanese Church Association JECA (Japan Evangelical Church Association). This was followed up in 2002 its mission Scientific studies at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois, where he in 2006 with his thesis on Christian mission in eschatological perspective: Lesslie Newbigin 's contribution to PhD PhD in Intercultural Studies. From 2002 to 2011 he was a lecturer in missiology at the theological seminar of the Liebenzell Mission, the forerunner of today's Liebenzell International University (IHL). Schuster has been deputy rector of the IHL since 2011, where he holds a chair for intercultural theology . He accompanied the expansion of the IHL Research Center for Interculturality and Religion into the LIMRIS ( Liebenzell Institute for Missiological, Religious, Intercultural and Social Studies ) research institute founded in 2017 , of which he was director until 2018.

Schuster has been a member of the American Society of Missiology since 2002, in the Working Group for Evangelical Missiology (AfeM) since 2003 and a member of the German Society for Missiology (DGMW) since 2013 . In 2009 he was the honorary coordinator of the Maisenbach Way of the Cross . In his former country of assignment, Japan, he led an aid team in 2011 after the earthquake and tsunami disaster . As a specialist lecturer, he gives lectures at the SRH University of Economics and Media Calw and at the theological workshop of the Evangelical Gnadauer Community Association .

Awards

  • In 2011, he was awarded the 500 Euro George W. Peters Prize for his dissertation on Lesslie Newbigin's contribution to understanding Christian mission .

Private

Schuster married Anette Vatter (daughter of Ernst Vatter ) in 1984 . The couple has one child and lives in Maisenbach (Bad Liebenzell) .
