Jürgen Toft

Jürgen Toft (born May 4, 1943 in Berlin ) is a German orthopedic surgeon who specializes in knee surgery .

Life

Toft grew up in East Berlin . He graduated from high school in 1962 and then did three years of military service. From 1965 to 1971 he studied medicine at the Berlin Humboldt University . From 1971 to 1972 Toft was an assistant at the Berlin Institute for Occupational Medicine .

In 1972 he managed to escape to West Germany, where he began training as a specialist in orthopedics in Biberach an der Riss . After the stations in Tailfingen and Ratingen as well as stays in the USA (American state examination 1975) he became a specialist in orthopedics in 1976. In the same year, a doctorate was awarded by the Saarland University and the orthopedic branch in Ingolstadt .

In 1980 he moved to North Rhine-Westphalia to the Fabricius Clinic in Remscheid , which was then the largest clinic in Germany, and specializes in knee surgery. In 1984 Toft founded the first German outpatient clinic for knee surgery in Munich.

In 1989 he accepted the Dutch spine specialist, Thomas Hoogland, into his institution. In 2000, a further spine specialist, Horst Dekkers, was accepted after the facility was expanded in 1997 and renamed Alpha Klinik . A shoulder department was opened in 2003 and a hip department (headed by Vilas Boas) in 2006 , with minimally invasive work being carried out in all specialist areas .

Toft's specialty is on the one hand arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament surgery , which he carried out arthroscopically in 1983 as the first in Europe and the second in the world. On the other hand, there is the abrasion arthroplasty , a procedure which his teacher, Prof. Lanny L. Johnson of the University of Michigan , had developed in Lansing and which Toft refined, "regenerated" so difficult osteoarthritic knee joints and destroyed before a prosthesis to be preserved can . For his work on the joint-preserving treatment of severe osteoarthritis of the knee joint, Toft was appointed professor at the University of Milan in 2005 and appointed to the Senate of the German Elite Academy in 2007. Together with Prof. Walter Pascale from the University of Milan, Toft is the founder of the International Association for Biologic Joint Reconstruction , which had its founding congress in Munich in October 2006.

Toft has organized several international knee surgery congresses and performed demonstration surgeries in Argentina, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

In 2002 he fought for the right to call himself a “knee specialist” at the Federal Constitutional Court and in 2003 he was instrumental in the judgment of the Federal Court of Justice on the legality of the billing of flat rates for private clinics (“Alpha Clinic Judgment”).

Toft became known in Germany through appearances in television programs, newspaper and magazine articles. In 2003, his work on osteoarthritis surgery was recognized in a cover story in Time magazine.

In 2008, the Alpha Klinik , founded by Jürgen Toft, had to file for bankruptcy and was taken over shortly afterwards by the operating company of the competing Heidelberg Atos Klinik. In August 2010, the “knee center”, which was opened in the immediate vicinity by Toft, was again opened for bankruptcy.
