Jürgen Weber (police officer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jürgen Weber (born May 5, 1953 in Sontra ; † October 27, 2015 ) was a German police officer who became known as the victim of an arson attack at a demonstration on May 10, 1976 in Frankfurt am Main .

The unannounced demonstration took place on the day after Ulrike Meinhof's death . Weber and his colleagues secured the end of the march and suffered life-threatening burns from a volley of Molotov cocktails thrown at his vehicle during the demonstration . 14 people, including Joschka Fischer , were taken into custody for two days as suspects . The perpetrators were not identified. After a long hospital stay, Weber returned to the police force in 1977 as a severely disabled person and retired at the end of May 2013.

The incident - triggered by a criminal complaint filed on January 8, 2001 by Bettina Röhl , Ulrike Meinhof's daughter - was again investigated by the police in spring 2001. Among the perpetrators, members of the so-called cleaning group were again suspected, to which in 1976, in addition to Fischer, the later member of the terrorist revolutionary cells Hans-Joachim Klein belonged. According to witness statements from those involved, Fischer is said to have approved the throwing of Molotov cocktails on the eve of the demonstration.

Weber, together with members of the Bundestag of the CDU-CSU parliamentary group , demanded Fischer's resignation as foreign minister in this context. In the German Bundestag he denied having thrown Molotov cocktails or called for them to be used. Fischer told the Spiegel that the incendiary device as a weapon “did not correspond to my attitude and convictions”. Weber held Fischer, however, due to his central position in the violent scene for "morally" responsible for the attack. At the beginning of February 2001, Justice Minister Christean Wagner declared in the Hessian state parliament that the Frankfurt public prosecutor had identified a person known by name as the alleged perpetrator. At the opening of a criminal case , however, and to clarify the situation it did not come as a result. In 2013 Weber told Stern magazine in view of numerous unresolved doubts: “For me, Joschka Fischer is the spiritual father of that act. The ringleader . He destroyed my life. "
