Jürgen Westphalen (Councilor)

Jürgen Westphalen (born September 14, 1666 in Hamburg , † June 27, 1735 in Hamburg-Hamm ) was a German merchant and Hamburg councilor .

Origin and family

Westphalen was born in Hamburg as the son of Claus Westphalen and Mette Schaar. His first marriage was Catharina Witte († 1707), the widow of Daniel Friel († 1692). After the death of his first wife, on August 8, 1708, he married Maria Wolters (1683–1765), daughter of the merchant and royal Swedish commissioner in Hamburg, Libert Wolters. Of the children from the second marriage, Maria (1713–1748) married the senior elder in the parish of Sankt Katharinen Johann Koep (1705–1777) in 1735 . The son Libert Westphalen (1716–1755) also became a businessman, had been married to Anna Maria Siemers (1723–1788) since 1743 and was the grandfather of the lawyer Nicolaus Adolf Westphalen (1793–1854).

Live and act

Westphalen became a Hamburg citizen in 1696 and as such was elected commercial judge at the lower court in 1708 . In 1718 he was elected Jurat in the parish of Sankt Nikolai and in 1727 he was elected to the Hamburg bank . From August 11, 1730 he was a councilor and administered this office until his death at his country estate in Hamburg-Hamm.
