history

The ship ran in 1964 as Tug Boat Dierkow in the shipyard "Edgar André" in Magdeburg from the stack . It was one of two tugs in the Dierkow series . The ship, which was 26.43 meters long and 7.60 meters wide when it was built, initially had a diesel-electric drive, the traction motor with an output of 660 kW being supplied by two diesel generators with 355 kW each. The maximum bollard pull of the tug was around ten tons and the crew could consist of up to eight people. The first owner of the Dierkow was the pilot, towing and salvage shipping company (BBB) ​​in Rostock, which used the ship in the Rostock overseas port for around 26 years.

In December 1995 the couple Anna and Jaap van der Rest took over the ship, had it towed to Amsterdam by heavy haulage in autumn 1996 and extensively converted it into a two-masted logger and then into a gaff top sail schooner by 1998 , with the propulsion system also being renewed. The base port is usually Kiel . In addition to the trips booked, the JR Tolkien can often be found together with the Loth Loriën of the same owner at events such as the Kiel Week or the Hamburg Port Birthday . In the first year of the renovation, the JR Tolkien took part in the Tall Ships Regatta in Rostock and took 2nd place in the schooner class. The JR Tolkien is one of the few ships that has been taking part in the Jade-Weser-Port Regatta for ten years without a break. The ship also regularly takes part in sailing meetings abroad. B. the Race of the Classics Rotterdam-Ramsgate 2003 and also participated in 2007, as well as the Armadas in Rouen 2003, 2008 and 2013 and the Tonnerres in Brest 2012.

The number of passengers permitted varies according to the length of the trip; standard trips have cabins for up to 32 participants, and up to 90 passengers on day tours. The passengers can be actively involved in the operation of the ship on request.

Accidents

A serious marine accident occurred on July 12, 2010. The JR Tolkien collided with the container ship Navi Baltic on the Kiel Canal . The 168 meter long container ship was on its way to the Baltic Sea, a few kilometers from the lock in Kiel-Holtenau . The JR Tolkien drove in the opposite direction on the way through the canal to Hamburg and collided with the port side of the freighter over a length of approx. 150 meters. While the Navi Baltic forfeited only color was on the JR Tolkien of wooden bowsprit of canceled completely flush, bowsprit bent and ribs damaged at several places on the port side. The Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation finally determined a tax error by the helmsman of the JR Tolkien .

In September 2012 the JR Tolkien ran aground near the Jade-Weser-Port with 90 students on board . No one was injured and after two other ships towed the JR Tolkien , the voyage could continue.
