Jaja is the 13th studio album by Marius Müller-Westernhagen . It was released on March 19, 1992 by WEA Records and reached number one in the German charts.

background

After the success of Halleluja , the subsequent tour in front of around 500,000 spectators and the recording of the concert on December 20, 1989 in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle for the double album Live , from which the single Freiheit was released in October 1990 , Westernhagen withdrew from the public .

He chose the Metropolis studio in the London borough of Chiswick to record the album and produced it himself without any support. The British rock band Queen recorded their album Innuendo in this studio, which Gary Langan co-founded . The background vocals, in which his wife Romney, Madeleine Lang and Tommy Engel , Ernst Stoklosa and Willy Schnitzler von den Bläck Fööss were also involved, was recorded by Dieter Krauthausen in the Can studio in Weilerswist . As a rhythm group in London again Charlie T. (Manfred Terstappen) played on drums and Raoul Walton on bass. Helmut Zerlett on Hammond organ and Jay Stapley on guitar complete Westernhagen's band. Additional studio musicians were used for some tracks, such as saxophonist Mel Collins (for war and stand up ), pianist Pete Wingfield ( war and don't turn around ) and percussionists Gary Wallis ( Charlie , Our Father , Negro ) and Martin Ditcham belonged. The Kick Horns were hired for wind sections. On the album, Westernhagen puts "blues mood and unretouched rock 'n' roll in the foreground".

There were more than 500,000 pre-orders for the album Jaja ; the album was as good as sold out within a few hours on the day of release. Following the release of the album, Westernhagen and his band went on a sold-out tour that kept the album in the German MediaControl charts for almost a year. The album, which was awarded two platinum records for more than a million records sold, brought Westernhagen to the Austrian and Swiss charts for the first time.

reception

The Musikexpress found that Westernhagen had "trashed the entire field of competition for German-language productions this year" with the album. Furthermore, the reviewer calls the album a "cross between dreamlike, light-footed ear piercing melodies and heavy rock 'n' roll". A contribution from the Sueddeutsche Zeitung ", according to German rock and grönemeyert it appalling".
