Jack C. Haldeman II
Jack Carroll "Jay" Haldeman II (born December 18, 1941 in Hopkinsville , Kentucky , † January 1, 2002 in Gainesville , Florida ) was an American biologist and science fiction writer. He was the older brother of science fiction writer Joe Haldeman .
Life
Jack Haldeman studied environmental engineering and biology at the University of Oklahoma and graduated from Johns Hopkins University . During his scientific career he was involved in parasitology , conducted field studies on whales in the Canadian Arctic , studies on the greenhouse effect and coordinated the design of a website and CD on agriculture in Florida. The tapeworm Hymenolepis haldemani is named after him.
Haldeman has published over 100 short stories; his first Garden of Eden appeared in Fantastic magazine in December 1971 . He is known for dealing with sports topics in the context of science fiction, for example in the story Home Team Advantage , published in 1977 in Asimov's Science Fiction magazine . His Hochstahl , a collaboration with Jack Dann , was nominated for the Nebula Award in 1982 .
In 1971 Haldeman became a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and subsequently led eight SF Conventions. In 1996 he received the Phoenix Award for his life's work . He was married to the writer Barbara Delaplace , with whom he also worked.
He died of cancer in the Hospice of North Central Florida in Gainesville .
