Life

Douglas was born into a family that had been on stage for more than 200 years. At the age of eleven, he ran away from home to work at the Feldman's Theater in Blackpool . With his partner Joe Baker he appeared as a comedy duo; they toured with Howard Keel and made a guest appearance with Cliff Richard at the London Palladium . After working together for twelve years, Douglas and Baker separated.

Between 1955 and 1957 he appeared in the first two seasons of the long-running game show Crackerjack! on, then he was until August 1959 show master of the show Bold Journey . Between 1963 and 1967 Douglas appeared together with the entertainer Des O'Connor on his television show. He had several appearances on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show and the Merv Griffin Show from the mid-1960s . In 1972 he had his first appearance in a film in the carry-on ... film series. Although he only had a tiny role in The Totally Crazy Head Sister, he would subsequently be the only actor who appeared in all the other films in the series. He also starred in the television series Carry On Laughing! as well as in the two Christmas specials.

Douglas retired to the Isle of Wight in 1996 with his partner Vivienne Russell. He had two children and a stepdaughter.
