Jacob Groth (born May 12, 1951 ) is a Danish composer . Since the late 1970s he has contributed the music to more than 30 film and television projects, including the International Emmy- winning series Unit One - The Specialists , Der Adler and Unge Andersen .

biography

Jacob Groth devoted himself initially of rock music and played in the 1960s and 1970s in several bands, a named it after himself. At the invitation of his childhood friend Rumle Hammerich he began in the late 1970s music for the final projects of film students at the Danish Film School to compose. Groth gained his first experience with Søren Kragh-Jacobsen's feature film debut Vil du se min smukke navle? (1978). He made his professional debut as a responsible film composer a year later with Henning Kristiansen's drama Charly & Steffen (1979).

The initial acquaintance with Kragh-Jacobsen led to decades of collaboration. Among other things, Groth took on the background music for The Boys of St. Petri (1991), The Hunt for the Magical Water Wheel (1993) and Skagerrak (2003), while the children's film Goldregen won him the Robert , the Danish Film Academy Prize, for the first time in 1989 . Since the beginning of the 1980s he took on the same task for his friend, the filmmaker Rumle Hammerich (among others Otto ist ein Nashorn , 1983; Fasadklättraren , 1991; Tödliches Desire , 1992; Opa Wanted!, 1994; Headhunter , 2009). Groth was also responsible for the jingles of Kragh-Jacobsen's and Hammerich's internationally award-winning DR television productions, Der Adler and Unge Andersen .

Groth values film compositions because they give him greater artistic freedom and are more timeless than pop music, for example. “Most of my work involves music that you wouldn't notice. But that doesn't mean the music is unimportant, it has to be something an ordinary piece of music can't because it would be too powerful. The music has to be almost transparent, transparent in order to support a dialogue, ” said Groth in an interview in 2005. The work for him starts with the writing of the film script in collaboration with the producer, director and screenwriter. Due to his different musical styles (for example blues for the television series Taxa ; spherical singing based on Icelandic mythology in Der Adler ), the composer describes himself as a “mood chameleon” .

Since the television series Taxa , Groth has also worked regularly with the film and television director Niels Arden Oplev . For his drama Worlds Apart , Denmark's official contribution to the nomination for the best foreign language film at the 2009 Academy Awards , he was again awarded the Danish Film Academy Award.

Groth's greatest international success to date was Oplev's feature film Verblendung . He presented the film music for the eponymous bestseller adaptation based on Stieg Larsson , which should bring him a nomination for the European Film Prize , together with the Copenhagen Athelas Symphony Orchestra during the “préludes musicaux” in Cannes .
