Jacob van Hulsdonck had various apprentices a. a. in the years 1613, 1617/18 and 1622/23. Maria la Hoes died in 1629, after which Jacob van Hulsdonck married the ship's widow Josina Peeters. Art historical importance

Jacob van Hulsdonck, “Imbissbild”, 1614, oil on panel, 51.5 × 85.5 cm, Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle

Jacob van Hulsdonck belongs like u. a. Jan Brueghel the Elder Ä. , Osias Beert and Clara Peeters to the group of early Flemish still life painters. As with other still life painters of the early 17th century, Jacob van Hulsdonck was not yet specialized in a subject in the sense of a certain type of still life. So there are pieces of flowers and pieces of fruit as well as banquetjes (snack pictures) of him. His meal still lifes show the arrangement of numerous objects on a table that was typical of the time and avoided overlaps, viewed from a high point of view. For his pieces of fruit, Hulsdonck almost exclusively painted plums, grapes, peaches, oranges and lemons served in Chinese plates and bowls or in a basket. Since the boundaries between the different types of still lifes were not completely defined at this early time, he occasionally combined his fruit baskets and plates with a small bouquet of flowers. Just as typical of Hulsdonck as a representative of early still life painting is the use of wooden panels and copper plates as supports for his paintings. Jacob van Hulsdonck's paintings reveal the influence and knowledge of other still life painters who were also active at the same time. Vroom saw clear parallels to the works of Jan Soreau, whereas Bergström particularly emphasized the closeness to Balthasar van der Ast . Sybille Ebert-Schiffer still points convincingly to similarities with simultaneous still lifes by Frans Snyders, who worked in Antwerp . Jacob van Hulsdonck signed not only the complete signature IVHULSDONCK · FE but also only with the initials JvH , which should not be confused with those of Jan van den Hoecke .
