Jacob of Paradise

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jakob von Paradies , also Jacob von Jüterbog , Jacobus Carthusiensis , Jacobus de clusa , originally Benedict Stolzenhagen (* 1381 ; † April 30, 1465 in Erfurt ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian, monk and author.

Life

Benedict Stolzenhagen probably came from a farming family. The origin from Jüterbog is uncertain. Since 1401 he lived with the religious name Jacobus as a Cistercian in the Paradies (Neumark) monastery (in Polish: Klasztor Paradyż ). Its abbot sent him to the University of Krakow for his scientific training . There he obtained the academic degrees of Master of Philosophy (1423) and Doctor of Theology (1432). After 1432 he lived in the Mogiła Monastery .

Because the discipline was not strict enough for him, he moved from the Cistercian order to the Carthusian order in 1441, with the approval of the papal legates at the Basel Council , and went to the Carthusian monastery in Erfurt . Here he stayed and became vicar ( prior ).

He taught as a professor of canon law at the University of Erfurt ; In 1456 he was its rector.

His writings have been handed down under different names. Therefore, attributions of his works in the past were often uncertain or incorrect. So Jakob von Gruitrode and Jakob von Tückelhausen were confused with him. Today he is regarded as an established author of over a hundred Latin scripts, which have come down to us in around 450 manuscripts and numerous prints. In numerous statements he supported the church and monastery reform and opposed excesses of popular belief . His death book De arte bene moriendi (around 1450), also on Johann Geiler von Kaysersberg , and a treatise on ghostly apparitions, De apparitionibus animarum (1454) , had a particular aftereffect . After his death, several of his writings were distributed in German translations. "It was only with the Reformation that J. reception largely broke off."
