Jacques-Édouard Alexis (born September 21, 1947 in Gonaïves ) is a Haitian politician . He was Prime Minister of his country from March 26, 1999 to February 7, 2001 and from June 9, 2006 to April 12, 2008.

Life

Alexis first attended the Lycée Geffrard in Gonaïves from 1959 to 1964 , and the Lycée Toussaint Louverture in Port-au-Prince from 1964 to 1966 . He studied at the Université d'État d'Haïti (UEH) in Port-au-Prince - Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine ( Faculté d'Agronomie et de médecine vétérinaire ). In 1979 he completed his studies with an M. Sc. ( Master of Science). He was a co-founder of the Quisqueya University (l'Université Quisqueya - UniQ), taught here as a professor for Technologie Alimentaire et de Technologie Post-Recolte ( food technology ) and was also the first director of UniQ from 1990 to 1996. Before he became Prime Minister under René Préval for the first time from March 26, 1999 to February 7, 2001 , he was head of the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sport (Ministre de l'Education Nationale, de la Jeunesse et of sport ; MENJS ).

Alexis was nominated as Prime Minister on May 21, 2006 by President René Préval , and his cabinet began work on June 9, 2006.

Repeated unrest in Haiti, caused by excessive food prices, forced Alexis to step down as Prime Minister on April 12, 2008. The Senate, the second chamber of parliament, dismissed the entire Haitian government under Alexis.

In view of the hunger riots, the World Bank has pledged emergency aid of US $ 10 million (around 6.3 million euros).

At the end of April 2008, Ericq Pierre was nominated by President René Préval as the new Prime Minister, but the nomination was not confirmed by the Houses of Congress. At the end of July 2008, Michèle Pierre-Louis was confirmed as the third nominee by both chambers. On September 5th, when the composition of her cabinet and her government program were approved, she succeeded Alexis.

In the presidential election on November 28, 2010 , Alexis runs as a candidate for the party Mobilization pour le Progrès Haïtien .
