Jadera haematoloma is a bug from the subfamily Serinethinae within the family of glass wing bugs (Rhopalidae).

features

The bugs occur both fully winged (macropter) and with receding wings (brachypter, especially the females). The former are 9.5–13.5 mm long, the latter measure 7–8 mm. The black elongated oval bugs have a red border on each side of the pronotum. The eyes are also red. The red upper side of the abdomen is covered by the black hemielytres in the macropter individuals , while it is clearly visible in the brachyptera individuals. In addition to the red-black bugs, there are two other color morphs (in the colors yellow-black and orange-black). In English, the bugs are also called red-shouldered bugs (" red-shouldered bugs"). The nymphs have a red abdomen and eyes and are otherwise black.

distribution

The bugs occur in the Nearctic and Neotropical . The northern limit of distribution runs in the United States from California via Kansas and Illinois to New Jersey . Furthermore, the species occurs in Central America , on the West Indies and in northern South America ( Venezuela , Colombia ). The species is also represented in Hawaii .

Way of life

The bugs specialize in species of the soap tree family (Sapindaceae). Its primary host plants include the balloon vine ( Cardiospermum halicacabum ), Cardiospermum grandiflorum , Cardiospermum corindum , Koelreuteria bipinnata , Koelreuteria elegans , the bladder ash ( Koelreuteria paniculata ), the washnut tree ( Sapachycarpa. Br ) and Serjorossi .

Koelreuteria paniculata is called the Goldenrain Tree in English . Another common name for bedbugs is derived from this: Goldenrain Tree Bugs . The bugs suck on the seeds and fruits of various trees. They can be found on a number of other plants such as ash maple , cedar tree , fig and marshmallow .

The nymphs and imagines looking for Hibernation frequent human habitations and form aggregations. They are therefore considered pests .

etymology

The name addition haematoloma is derived from the Greek and means "blood-lined".
