Centuries oak
The century oak is a memorial tree on the south-eastern edge of the Barmer Forest in Wuppertal near Villa Foresta . The oak was used on 1 April 1908 centenary of the then independent city Barmen planted.
The city was founded when the French occupiers issued a decree on January 4, 1808, naming the personalities who were to belong to the city's new council. On February 3, 1808, the new municipal councilors were sworn in by the provincial council, headed by Carl Bredt . This date is considered to be the day on which Barmen, which has a population of 14,000, received city rights. The planting of the century oak 100 years later was one of several celebrations for the anniversary ; Among other things, the foundation stone for the new Barmer town hall was laid in the presence of the Crown Prince couple.
At the same time named "Jahrhundertplatz", the intersection of the forest paths Kuckucksweg and Waldweg , the oak has stood to this day. The then 17-year-old tree was selected by the Barmer Beautification Association and had already reached a height of 7.77 meters. One meter above the ground, it had a trunk diameter of 16 centimeters and a trunk circumference of 51 centimeters. At the time of the planting, one had a wide view of the surrounding forests from the century square. In the distance, Radevormwald was visible on the horizon .
The act of planting began with the welcoming address given by the chairman of the Barmer Beautification Association, Robert Barthels . On behalf of the Lord Mayor, Alderman Paul Hartmann thanked the Beautification Association for the preparation of the square with the oak tree as a "symbol of a flourishing community" and for the association's work for the city. The people present symbolically each filled three shovels of earth into the planting hole.
A wooden plaque on the trunk bears the inscription :

Barmen is now a district of Wuppertal. The district council of Heckinghausen , the city district in which the Barmer Forest is located, had the Jahrhundertplatz prepared for the “200th anniversary of the city of Wuppertal” and two new benches that frame the square were donated by the district association Heckinghausen and Heidt. The Sauerland Mountain Association will migrate on April 1st to commemorate the planting in two groups, from two directions, to the centuries-old oaks. The “Barmen 2008” project group will provide information on the 200th anniversary.
