Jakob Greiß (born September 20, 1800 in Pempelfort, today's Düsseldorf-Pempelfort ; † September 14, 1853 in Baden-Baden ) was garden director of the first botanical garden in Cologne and head of all urban green spaces.

Life

Jakob Greiß was a student of Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe . Under this he spent his apprenticeship years in the royal court garden in Düsseldorf . He later worked as an assistant in the Royal Gardens of Potsdam , Munich and Sanssouci . In 1836 he was appointed gardener of the old Cologne Botanical Garden by Minister Karl Freiherr von Stein on behalf of the state government and at the same time was entrusted with the management of all municipal gardens. Greiß gave lessons in botany and lived in a house he had freely available near the Cologne Central School in Marzellenstrasse (from which the Dreikönigsgymnasium emerged), at the Botanical Garden in Maximinenstrasse. His remuneration amounted to an annual salary of 850 thalers . Jakob Greiß brought his acquired experience and skills, especially in the field of landscape gardening, to Cologne and the surrounding area.

Greiß's early work included the management of the implementation of the plans of the Düsseldorf court gardener Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe for the layout of the English landscape garden at Brünninghausen Palace , today the Rombergpark Botanical Garden , between 1817 and 1824.
