Jakob Nüesch (biologist)

Jakob Nüesch (born November 8, 1932 in Balgach , Canton St. Gallen , † February 4, 2016 ) was a Swiss biochemist . From 1990 to 1997 he was President of the ETH Zurich .

Life

Jakob Nüesch grew up in Balgach in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. He studied agricultural engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich), where he graduated in 1958 as an agricultural engineer (dipl. Ing. Agr. ETH) and then in 1960 at the Institute for Special Botany with a dissertation in mycology and phytopathology as a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . After graduating in 1961, Nüesch began working in the chemical / pharmaceutical industry at Ciba-Geigy in Basel in the fields of microbiology and biotechnology. Between 1987 and 1990 he was head of the research department in the pharmaceutical division of Ciba-Geigy and a member of the board of directors of Ciba-Geigy.

His scientific work took place in Canada, the USA and Germany. For many years he was a lecturer at the newly founded Biozentrum of the University of Basel . In 1972 he completed his habilitation in microbiology at the University of Basel, where he was appointed associate professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel in 1978. On September 1, 1990, he was elected President of ETH Zurich by the Swiss Federal Council and held the office until 1997.

Nüesch was married to Elena Julietta Schaller from 1960.
