education and profession

Jakob Vetsch grew up as the eldest son of the Grabser council clerk David Vetsch (* 7 February 1863, † 25 June 1924) and Louise, b. Bosshart (born June 30, 1861; † September 27, 1925) in his parents' house in Stauden. There he attended primary school, then the Werdenberg secondary school in Buchs.

In 1902 Jakob Vetsch went to Chiasso in the canton of Ticino for two years to learn the Italian language . When he returned to German-speaking Switzerland, he worked at a post office in Lucerne .

He entered the public service early on , first as a substitute local council clerk and as a police cashier for the municipality of Grabs, from 1921 as a deputy clerk in the Werdenberg district office in Buchs and from 1923 as a district clerk .

After Vetsch had performed this task for almost twenty years, the Werdenberg population elected him as district administrator in 1942. He held this office until his unexpected death in his Buchs office on the Wednesday of Holy Week in 1944. According to the custom at the time, the abdication ceremonies took place on Easter Sunday in Grabs.

Family and free time

Jakob Vetsch married Katharina Lippuner (* July 20, 1890, † February 25, 1972) in 1910. The couple lived in their common home at Kirchbünt in Grabs. It had seven children, the daughters Louise, Ursula and Käthi, as well as the sons David, Jakob, Florian and Hans. His son Florian Vetsch was to succeed him later in the office of district administrator.

The family used to sing , and so Jakob Vetsch used his voice in the local church and men's choir, of which he became an honorary member in 1926. The social game in the Jassrunde and hiking in the nearby recreational area of the Voralp also brought distraction and relaxation from everyday work .

His friendship with the then Catholic pastor Müller from Gams SG was evidence of a mutual liberal and ecumenical spirit . Such a connection was not a matter of course at the time, since the aftermath of the cultural war between the denominations had not yet completely subsided in the canton of St. Gallen .
