Jakob Zeidler

Jakob Zeidler (born September 13, 1855 in Vienna , † August 20, 1911 in Mödling ) was an Austrian teacher, literary researcher and member of the scientific commission of the theater and music exhibition in Vienna.

Zeidler was the son of Franz and Anna (nee Hartl) Zeidler. He attended the Schottengymnasium in Vienna with the German scholars Jakob Minor , August Sauer and Joseph Seemüller . During this time, the Germanist Hugo Mareta especially influenced the young Zeidler. From 1875 to 1879 Zeidler studied German, Romance studies and history at the University of Vienna and finally completed his studies with a teaching degree in German, history and geography. From 1881 to 1885 Zeidler lectured at the Vienna Commercial Academy , from 1885 to 1889 at the Imperial and Royal State High School in Oberhollabrunn . From 1889 until his leave of absence for health reasons in 1911, he taught at the imperial-royal state high school in Vienna. In 1892 he was appointed a member of the scientific commission of the theater and music exhibition in Vienna and also served as a member of various examination commissions. In 1911 Zeidler was finally retired and honored as a councilor. Zeidler acted together with Johann Willibald Nagl as the editor of the multi-volume work “German-Austrian Literary History. A handbook on the history of German poetry in Austria-Hungary ”which was written between 1898 and 1937. After Zeidler's death in 1914, Eduard Castle took over his role as editor of the four-volume literary history. Zeidler died at the age of 55 and is buried in the family crypt.

Zeidlergasse in Vienna-Liesing (formerly Haidengasse) was named after Jakob Zeidler on October 2nd, 1957.
