St Anthony of Padua and the Baby Jesus (1687)

Live and act

Initially trained by his father Jakob van Oost the Elder in Bruges, he deepened his art studies for two years in Paris . He then devoted himself to antiquity and the old masters in Rome for several years . After his return to Bruges he wanted to go back to Paris, but stayed in Lille with his friends from his student days and lived in this northern French city for 41 years from 1668.

Jakob van Oost the Younger became a recognized portrait painter in this city alongside Arnould de Vuez . In keeping with the times, his paintings contained religious themes. In 1670 he married Marie Bourgeois from Lille, who gave birth to his son Dominique van Oost , who was also a painter.

In 1709 he left Lille as a result of the War of the Spanish Succession and returned to his hometown Bruges to protect himself from the war, where he died four years later at the age of 76.

style

Jakob van Oost the Younger painted in the late style of his father. The younger man's works have good coloring , broader folds, the number of well-drawn figures is fewer in his well-thought-out compositions . His portraits of males should be emphasized .

Numerous works by the Flemish master can be found in museums and religious institutions in Bergues , Boston , Bruges, Brussels , Douai , Lille, Orléans and in Paris in the Louvre .
