Jacob van Oost (* around 1600 in Bruges , † around 1671 in Bruges) was a Flemish painter of the Baroque in Bruges. His oeuvre includes history and portrait paintings .

Live and act

On January 19, 1619 Jakob van Oost was listed as an apprentice of his brother Franz van Oost (1618 Freimeister in Bruges; † around 1625) in the Bruges painters' guild. His early works include copies of the paintings by Jan van Eyck and Peter Paul Rubens , some of which were considered originals in 1857. In 1621 he was appointed free master. In keeping with the times, he studied the works of Hannibal / Annibale Carracci influenced by Caravaggio in Italy in the 1920s. After his return he was a sought-after commission artist for portraits, historical paintings and altarpieces from 1630 onwards. In 1633 he was elected chief, the dean of the shield guild. His students included his sons Jakob van Oost the Younger , who continued his father's school, and Willem van Oost (~ March 8, 1651 in Bruges; † August 31, 1866 there), who was a painter and lay brother in the Dominican Republic .

After his Rubens copies, he came to his own style in a dark and toned overall attitude. His late work from 1660 consists of blackish toned works. His paintings can be found in religious institutions and collections in Bruges, as well as in Belgian private ownership and in the following museums in Bergues , Berlin , Brussels , Caen , Dijon , Dunkirk , Leningrad , Lille , London , Lyon , New York City (Histor. Soc. Cat. 1903 and Metropolitan Museum ), Ostend , Paris , Tournai , Valenciennes and Vienna .
