description

Vegetative characteristics

Jaltomata atiquipa is a shrub up to 1.5 meters high . The older branches are hollow, brown in color and covered with cork pores up to 1 centimeter in size. Younger branches are green, weakly downy and twisty. The leaves are alternate, rarely opposite. Their leaf blades are ovate, larger leaves are incised at the base, occasionally also slightly oblique. The point is pointed or nearly pointed, sometimes tapering to a point. The leaf margin is almost entire to toothed. Younger leaves are lightly downy, but later bald. The leaf blades reach sizes of 11 × 13 centimeters, the leaf stalks are up to 4.2 centimeters long.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are in the stem axils and consist of seven, rarely up to twelve flowers . Inflorescence stalk and pedicels are round, green, fine-haired to hairless; the peduncle becomes up to 21 millimeters long, the pedicels up to 11 millimeters long. The calyx is green, flat at flowering time and 8 to 11 millimeters in diameter. Its calyx tips are triangular and ciliate on the edge. The crown is white, flat, bowl-shaped, five-part and 12 to 15 millimeters in diameter. There are ten green spots at the base of the crown. The hair on the crown consists of non-glandular, single-row trichomes up to 0.8 millimeters in length and stalked glands with multicellular heads that are 75 to 85 micrometers in size.

The stamens are 4 millimeters long, the stamens are whitish and hairless except for 0.2 millimeter long trichomes at the base. The anthers are 1.1 to 1.4 mm long, prickly and cream-colored before opening. The pollen grains measure 25 to 30 micrometers in diameter. The gynoeceum is hairless, only on the scar there are papillae up to 0.03 millimeters long . The stylus is whitish, up to 6 millimeters long and ends in a green, head-like scar with a weak notch in the middle. The scar protrudes beyond the opened anthers. The ovary is green, the fruit base is tinted orange and corresponds to about 60% of the height of the ovary. About 81 to 94 ovules are formed per ovary compartment .

Fruits and seeds

Ripe fruits and seeds have not yet been observed, but it is believed that they are orange, almost spherical fruits.

Occurrence

The species is endemic to the Loma formation lomas de antiquipa near the southern Peruvian city of Antiquipa in the Caraveli province . The epithet is a reference to this location.
