description

Vegetative characteristics

Jaltomata cajacayensis is a shrub that can grow to a height of 1.1 m . Its woody, rounded and hairless trunk can have a diameter of at least 1.5 cm at the base. The young twigs, the inflorescence stalks , flower stalks and the outside of the calyx are tomentose, the trichomes are unbranched, up to 3 mm long, stand upright and have a glandular tip.

The leaves are opposite, often in pairs, the leaf blade is egg-shaped or triangular and is up to 9 cm long and 10 cm wide. Both sides are hairy with simple, glandular trichomes. The leaf margin is curled, with up to five pairs of broad, rounded teeth, curved or serrated. The petiole becomes up to 3.2 cm long.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are in the axils or less often in a branch of the stem axis. They are umbels that consist of six to 14 flowers . The peduncle becomes up to 15 mm long, the pedicels up to 20 mm long.

The calyx is colored green when it blooms and measures 3 to 4 mm long from the base to the tips of the calyx tips. The edge of the calyx is ciliate, the trichomes are branched and 0.25 mm long and glandular and then up to 1 mm long. On the inside of the calyx there are trichomes up to 4 mm long. When the fruit ripens, the calyx enlarges to a diameter of 13 mm and is star-shaped.

The crown consists of a short corolla tube and a curved crown hem. It is colored matt olive green, in the corolla tube there are two dark green drawings next to the central vein of the corolla, the opening of the corolla tube is surrounded by a narrow purple ring. At the coronary hem there are five large corolla lobes, between which there are five smaller lobes. The corolla tube has a diameter of 1.5 to 2 mm and a length of 6.5 to 8 mm, the coronet has a diameter of 10.3 to 19.2 mm. The inside of the corolla tube is hairless. The coronet is finely haired, the trichomes are simple and 0.21 to 0.5 mm long and glandular and 0.15 to 1.2 mm long. The edge of the crown is ciliate, these trichomes are up to 0.6 mm long. On both sides of the calyx and on the outside of the crown there are also 75 to 90 µm long, multicellular, glandular trichomes.

The stamens are 7 mm long, the filaments are felted hairy at the lower fifth with violet, up to 1.5 mm long trichomes, wherein the length of the trichomes of the anthers decreases toward. The anthers are cream colored, and 1 to 2.1 mm long. The stylus is 3.5 to 10 mm long and ends in a dark green, head-shaped, 0.5 to 0.9 mm wide scar that is about 5.5 mm in front of the anthers. The scar is covered with papillae about 45 µm in size . The nectary is a disk around the ovary bulges.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are orange berries that are almost spherical and reach a diameter of 5 to 9 mm. They contain numerous seeds that are almost triangular to kidney-shaped and pitted and reach a size of 1.4 to 1.7 × 1.1 to 1.3 mm and are 0.5 to 0.55 mm thick.

Occurrence

The species is only known from one location near the town of Cajacay in the Peruvian department of Ancash . In Quechua the plant is called "musho".

use

The fruits of the species are eaten as fruit, and the leaves and flowers are used to make a tea, which is used as a medicine for stomach pain, diarrhea and to regulate menstruation.
