James C. Veatch

James Clifford Veatch (born December 19, 1819 near Elizabeth , Harrison County , Indiana , † December 22, 1895 in Rockport , Spencer County , Indiana) was an American lawyer , officer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Early years

James Clifford Veatch attended community schools and took private lessons. He studied law and was admitted to the bar . He then opened a private practice in Elizabethtown , Indiana, where he practiced for many years. He also served as the auditor of Spencer County , Indiana, from 1841 to 1855 . In the following period he also pursued a political career. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives in 1856 and represented his home state as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in 1860 . He was then a member of the Indiana House of Representatives in 1861 .

American Civil War

After the start of the American Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army and was appointed commander of the 25th Indiana Infantry Regiment with the rank of colonel . He led the regiment in the Battle of Fort Donelson and then took command of the 4th Brigade in the Division of Stephen A. Hurlbut at the Battle of Shiloh . Major John W. Foster noted, "Colonel Veatch showed great bravery. He was always in the thick of the action with his brigade."

On April 28, 1862, Veatch was promoted to Brigadier General of the Volunteers. He then led his brigade at the Battle of Corinth and the battle at Hatchies Bridge , where he was wounded. The following year General Veatch was in command of the Memphis Military District. Then he led the 4th Division of the XVI. Corps during the Battle of Meridian. His division was then subordinated to William T. Sherman for the Atlanta campaign , where they fought in the battles of Resaca, Dallas and Kennesaw Mountain. He went on convalescence leave on July 17, 1864, just before the Battle of Atlanta. When he returned to active duty, his former commanding officer, Oliver O. Howard instructed him to wait in Memphis for further orders. He briefly commanded the Western Tennessee Defense District before being reassigned to the Gulf Army. There he took command of the 1st Division of Gordon Grangers XIII. Corps and so took part in the battle for Fort Blakely. In March 1865 he became a brevet - Major General promoted and retired from the August of the same year military service from.

After the war, Veatch became an adjutant general of Indiana in 1869 . He was also active in local veterans' organizations and brotherhoods , including the Grand Army of the Republic and the Freemasons . He also worked as a tax collector from April 1870 to August 1883. Then in 1884 he took part again as a delegate to the Republican National Convention .

James C. Veatch died on December 22, 1895 in Rockport, Indiana and was subsequently buried in Sunset Hill Cemetery .
