James Till

James Edgar Till (born August 25, 1931 in Lloydminster , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian biophysicist and stem cell and cancer researcher and former professor at the University of Toronto .

Life

Till earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in physics in 1952 from the University of Saskatchewan ( Saskatoon , Canada), and a Ph.D. in 1957. at Yale University ( New Haven (Connecticut) , USA). As a postdoctoral fellow he went to the Connaught Medical Research Laboratories in Toronto and was one of the founding scientific staff of the Ontario Cancer Institute as a sister institution to the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto in 1958 . While he was initially in the Department of Physics, Till moved to the Department of Biological Research in 1967, which he became head of in 1969. In addition, from 1958 Till worked at the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto , where he took on an associate professorship in 1965 and a full professorship in 1968. Since 1996 he has been Senior Scientist Emeritus at the Ontario Cancer Institute and since 1997 University Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto .

Till is married and has three children.

Act

Till first looked at the radiation sensitivity of various mammalian tissues, including the bone marrow . Together with Ernest A. McCulloch , he published fundamental work on the biology of stem cells and on the physiology and pathophysiology of hematopoiesis . From 1980 Till turned to questions of quality of life , research ethics or decision-making in cancer patients . More recent work deals with the dissemination of health information via the Internet ( e-health ) with a special focus on the open access movement .
