James Metcalf

James Metcalf (born March 11, 1925 in New York City , USA , † January 27, 2012 in Santa Clara del Cobre , Mexico ) was an American sculptor .

life and work

James Metcalf studied at the Dayton Art Institute , Dayton (Ohio) , the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts , Philadelphia , and in London . He focused on ancient metallurgy in the Mediterranean in the artists' village of Deia on Mallorca , where he and the wooden blocks for the prints in the book Adam's Rib of Robert Graves created, which he illustrated.

From 1956 to 1967 he worked in Paris in a studio across from Constantin Brâncuși's studio . After a major retrospective of his art in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City , Metcalf dealt with historical Mexican techniques of copper processing in the mountains of Michoacán . In 1973 he founded the Adolfo Best Maugard School of Arts and Crafts in Santa Clara del Cobre there, together with the Mexican sculptor Ana Pellicer .

James Metcalf's work often involves the use of innovative techniques and also uses traditional methods. His works are partly assigned to surrealism , the majority to abstract sculpture.

He has received awards from the Clark Foundation Grant and the Copley Foundation , among others .

Important exhibitions (selection)

James Metcalf exhibited in the most important galleries in Paris , London , New York and Mexico City (among others) .

He was a participant in the exhibitions at Goldsmith's Hall in London in 1952. He also exhibited at the Third Biennale of Spanish-American Art in Barcelona in 1955 and was a participant in documenta III in Kassel in 1964 in the sculpture department .

His work is part of the permanent collection of a number of museums, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC ; the University of Arizona Museum; the collection of the New York Hilton Hotel and Yale University Museum .
