James Morsley Anderson (born  September 14, 1940 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin ) is an American doctor and chemist . He has been Professor of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University since 1979 and is currently one of the most internationally renowned researchers in the field of biomaterials science .

Life

James Anderson was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 1940 and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1963 . Four years later , he received his PhD in organic chemistry from Oregon State University . In 1976 he graduated in medicine at Case Western Reserve University from, then he graduated to 1979 a residency in pathology . Since 1979 he has been professor of pathology, macromolecular sciences and biomedical engineering at the Clinical Center of Case Western Reserve University and is scientifically active in the field of biomaterial research. His research focuses on the biocompatibility of medical implants and the interactions between implants and the surrounding tissue , in particular the inflammatory , wound healing and immune reactions after the insertion of an implant as well as the role of macrophages and giant cells in these processes. He is editor ( Editor in Chief ) of the journal Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A and consultant to various organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

James Anderson was a founding member and at times president of the American Society for Biomaterials ( Society for Biomaterials ). He is the only scientist in the field of biomaterials research to have received a Merit Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the period from 1993 to 2003, a prize awarded by the NIH on the basis of completed NIH projects is associated with up to ten years of funding from the NIH. Since 1996 he has been a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering , the World Association of Societies for Biomaterials Sciences, and since 2003 he has been a member of the Institute of Medicine of the American Academy of Sciences . In addition, he received the 2005 Elsevier Biomaterials Gold Medal for most contributions by a single researcher in the field of biomaterials science between 1980 and 2005, during which he published 237 scientific publications .
