James Walton Vaupel (born May 2, 1945 in New York , NY ) is an American population scientist , professor of demography , epidemiology and gerontology and director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR).

Life

Vaupel studied mathematical statistics at Harvard University , where he also earned his BA in 1967. From 1967 to 1975, Vaupel worked as a research assistant at Harvard Business School and participated in the Harvard Multinational Enterprise Project , a study of 187 American companies on the typical sequence of organizational structures. Parallel to this activity, Vaupel obtained a Masters in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1971 . In 1978 Vaupel did his doctorate there at the Kennedy School of Government with a dissertation on the subject of Early Death: A Policy Analysis of the Prospects for Saving Lives (German: Early Death - a guide to measures to save lives ) for Ph. D.

From 1972 to 1985 Vaupel was an adjunct lecturer at the Institute for Political Science and Public Affairs at Duke University, from 1979 to 1982 as an advisor to the US Environmental Protection Agency and from 1979 to 1981 as an investigative head in the committee for risk and decision-making of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC After a short academic stay at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg / Austria, Vaupel accepted the call to the University of Minnesota in 1988 and became Professor of Age Research, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Professor of Public Affairs and Planning. In 1991 Vaupel returned to Europe and became Professor of Demography and Epidemiology at the Institute for Public Health at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark. Parallel to the professorship in Odense ( until 2002 ), Vaupel remained a scientist at the Sanford Institute of Duke University from 1992 to 2005, which was upgraded to a research professorship in 2006.

Vaupel has been director at the MPIDR in Rostock since 1996 and has been director of the Rostock Center for Research into Demographic Change since 2004. In addition, Vaupel heads the Population, Policy, Aging and Research Center at Duke University and holds numerous other functions, including as rector of the European Doctoral School of Demography , honorary professor at the University of Rostock and a member of the review committee for social science and population studies at the National Institute of Health . James Vaupel is married to Bodil Gøbel Vaupel and has two children.
