James W. Sullivan
James W. Sullivan (born July 17, 1909 in St. Louis , Missouri , † October 10, 1974 in Los Angeles County , California ) was an American production designer and art director .
Life
Sullivan began his film staff career in 1937 as assistant art director on the set of James Whale's war drama The Road Back . Between 1944 and 1950 he worked on over 30 feature films, including Battle Thunderstorms on Monte Cassino and In the Last Second . In 1957 he was nominated for the monumental film Around the World in 80 Days together with Ken Adam and Ross Dowd for the Oscar in the category of best production design, but that year the award went to the musical film The King and Me . Other films with his participation include the Western Hot Colts in Hard Fists and Charro! .
He first worked for television in 1955, and slowly the focus of his work shifted to television, where he worked until his death in 1974. His work as art director included mainly television series, including the western series Rauchende Colts , Have Gun - Will Travel and the agent series Solo for ONCEL. In 1966, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his work on the latter series . His last engagement was the Hawkins justice series with James Stewart in the title role.
