Jan Šafránek (born April 9, 1948 in Hradec Králové ) is a Czech painter and draftsman .

Life

Jan Šafránek took private lessons in drawing and painting when he was twelve. After graduating from high school, he set up his first studio in Hradec Králové, where the first figural paintings were created. In order to earn a living, he worked in different professions at the same time. In 1969 he passed the typeface painter examination in Pardubice and worked as a painter for film advertising. In 1974 he moved to Prague , where he worked as a freelance artist, associated with artists from the alternative scene, took part in unofficial exhibitions and helped to organize happenings .

As a signatory of Charter 77 , he emigrated to Austria in 1979 and studied with Unger at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna . In 1981 he settled in Sydney . Travels led him through Australia, New Zealand, several South Sea islands, both America and again and again to Italy. In 1990 he returned to Europe and has lived in Vienna and Prague ever since.

The themes of his works are primarily to be assigned to contemporary genre painting, in which quotations from old masters from Brueghel to Rubens can be found again and again: everyday scenes on streets and markets, in wine bars and cafes as well as allegorical festivals rich in figures.

His style is characterized by clear, detailed shapes and brilliant colors achieved by carefully mixing the hues.

Works by Jan Šafránek are in private and public collections, including a. in the Czech National Library in Prague and in the Slovak National Gallery , Bratislava.
