Jan Bernd Bicker

Jan Bernd Bicker (born August 27, 1746 in Amsterdam , † December 16, 1812 in Wassenaar ), Knight of the Legion of Honor , was an important Dutch patriotic politician and statesman. He presided over the Batavian Republic for two brief periods .

Life

Jan Bernd Bicker came from the important Bicker family and was born as the son of the banker and Amsterdam jury (Dutch: Schepen ) Henrick Bicker (1722–1783) and Clara Magdalena Dedel (1727–1778). He was married to Catharina Six ; his son Henrick Bicker (1777-1834) was introduced to the new Dutch nobility in 1815 with the Jonkheer title .

Jan Bernd Bicker joined the Amsterdam city government as Schepen in 1772 and was appointed head of the Amsterdam Chamber of the Dutch West India Company in 1774 . Between the years 1781 and 1787 he was a member of the Amsterdam Magistrate (Dutch: Vroedschap ). One of his other posts was that of director of the Suriname Law Firm . In 1786 he was a member of the Dutch States General in The Hague . Like his ancestors in the Golden Age, Jan Bernd Bicker was a republican-minded politician and an opponent of the House of Orange-Nassau . As the head of the patriots and opponent of the House of Orange, Bicker fled to Brussels from Prussian auxiliary troops in 1787 . Bicker moved to Paris and attended the establishment of the new States General in Versailles . Bicker became a member of the Comité Revolutionair Batave (Bataafs Revolutionair Comité). In 1793 he received French citizenship.

After the founding of the Batavian Republic , he returned to Amsterdam via Biel in Switzerland in 1795. There he came to the government of the city as a councilor in the same year. Jan Bernd Bicker was accepted into the Nationale Vergadering, the first Dutch parliament, after a short time. Between April 17 and May 3, 1796 he was chairman of the Eerste Nationale Vergadering . He had another chairmanship of the Batavian Republic from May 1 to May 15, 1797 as chairman of the Tweede Nationale Vergadering . As a member of the Staatsbewind (created by the Dutch Basic Law of October 16, 1801), Jan Bernd Bicker had an audience with Napoleon Bonaparte and Talleyrand in Brussels in 1805 . There the preparations for the takeover of the land by Louis Bonaparte were discussed. Jan Bernd Bicker was made Knight of the Legion of Honor by Napoleon . During the time of the Kingdom of Holland and the subsequent occupation by France, Bicker could no longer play a political role.
