Jan Gehl (born September 17, 1936 ) is a Danish architect and urban planner from Copenhagen , founder of Gehl Architects, Copenhagen, and professor emeritus of the Royal Danish Academy of Art . Gehl places a special focus on improving the urban infrastructure and optimizing the quality of life for people, especially pedestrians , cyclists , senior citizens and families .

Life

In 1960 Gehl graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and worked as an architect from then until 1966. Gehl married a psychologist soon after graduating . This had a great influence on his planning work. By his own admission, a large part of the conversation revolved around the question of why architects are not interested in people . In 1966 Gehl received a research grant and became visiting professor in Canada, USA, Mexico, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Poland and Norway.

The Strøget in Copenhagen as the longest pedestrian zone in Europe goes back to Gehl. Using Copenhagen as an example, his book Public Spaces, Public Life describes how, within 40 years, a city that is heavily influenced by car traffic has become a place of traffic calming with many different meeting zones.

Gehl oversees urban development projects all over the world. In 2004 he worked on a study for Transport for London on the quality of public space in London . In 2007 he was hired by the Department of Transportation of New York City to improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians there.

Gehl's concepts are at the center of the documentary The Human Scale , which will also be distributed on DVD in Germany in 2014.

Which he led the office Gehl Architects works with the Danish Cycling Embassy ( Cycling Embassy of Denmark , CED), the knowledge and experience in promoting cycling spread worldwide.
