Jan Ostroróg (* 1565 - † June 1622 ) was castellan of Posen (since 1600), voivode of Posen (since 1610), diary writer and naturalist .

biography

Jan Ostroróg was the son of Stanisław Ostroróg and Zofia z Tęczyński , who had both converted to the Evangelical Lutheran religion and passed it on to him. Jan Ostroróg, however, was converted and converted back to Catholicism in 1587 . He was friends with Piotr Skarga . In the election of the king in 1587, he gave his vote to Sigismund III. Wasa . He was very loyal to Jan Zamoyski . In 1588 he was appointed Podczaszy wielki koronny (pocillator Regni) and in 1600 castellan of Posen . During the Zebrzydowski uprising, he supported the king and tried to mediate between him and the insurgents. He took part in the Battle of Guzów . In 1610 Jan Ostroróg was appointed voivode of Poznan .

He lived mostly in Ruthenia , but never neglected his Wielkopolska estates. After the return to Catholicism in 1589, the Protestants in Grodzisk Wielkopolski received their own church. In 1593 he founded the Neustadt there , for which he held privileges.

Jan Ostroróg was married twice, the first time to Katarzyna Mielecka , daughter of the Voivode of Podlaskie Voivodeship Mikołaj Mielecki , the second time to Princess Zofia Zasławska.

Jan Ostroróg had extensive literary activity, he is the car u. a. from Myślistwo z ogary (Hunting with Dogs, 1618). He also published the first Polish beekeeping guides on how to keep beehives .
