Jan Roth (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan Roth (* 1977 in Oelsnitz im Vogtland ) is a German musician ( drums , also piano , composition ) who also pursues a solo career.

Live and act

Roth, who grew up in Markneukirchen, received his first piano lessons from his grandfather at the age of five. In addition, he began taking drum lessons at the age of eleven. After graduating from the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Zwickau , he studied jazz drums at the Leipzig University of Music from 1997 to 2002 . In New York he deepened his education at the Manhattan School of Music and the Aaron Copland School of Music with various teachers such as Billy Drummond .

After completing his studies, Roth played with Clueso , Max Prosa , Hundreds , Nina Hagen and Steve Swallow . In addition, they created their own albums with a very special, spherical sound. He also played with Jazzpress - The Electric , LeipzigBigBand, the Trio Schmetterling, Yelena K & The Love Trio, the Cakewalkin 'Babies , Bertram Burkert ( The Eye of the Viewer ) and Luise Volkmann .

Roth has lived in Leipzig since 2015 . There he set up a larger apartment with friends, which they also used as a studio.

His album LOW (songs without words), which was released by the Berlin label Sinnbus , supposedly came about out of boredom. A tour that Roth was supposed to accompany had canceled and suddenly he had a month to devote himself to his creativity. All the songs were recorded in his apartment. There was no great technology available to him, which reduced the sound to the essentials and what made it sound natural. This album came on the quarterly best list of the German Record Critics' Award as a connection between “ Postrock with neo-classical music and some electronics. [...] A declaration of love to the sunny side of melancholy. " Die Zeit titled LOW as a" not too small feat [...]: He has, if you want to call it that, played wellness music that does without one of the usual templates. It is music that the lonely can listen to to drive away boredom. "

Finally, noisey by VICE presented the music video for Roth's piece Twenty One . The album Kleinod followed in 2018 ,
