With his school friend Rudolf Werner Kipp , Haux founded a. a. together with Heinrich Klemme the "Atlantis production group" and among other things shot a documentary for the UFA on Rügen . After World War II, he made a living as a painter for some time by selling paintings to American occupation soldiers.

In 1950 Jan Thilo Haux was the cameraman for the short documentary Sächsisches Gold . He also had the same function in the short documentary German Football Championship 1952 in 1952 . He was responsible for the direction of the film In der Bogenstrasse (1955) . This film was made by his own production company, Thilo Film , based in Hamburg. Haux also shot with Max H. Rehbein , Thilo Koch and Rüdiger Proske .

In addition, Haux was the first and long-time cameraman for the newsreel (1946–1952). The first film reports were shot on 35 mm film material. From 1950 he worked with the establishment of the NWDR and shot more and more reports in the cheaper and space-saving 16 mm film material . From 1953, Haux worked as chief cameraman for the news program Tagesschau on ARD . In 1964 he became chief cameraman at NDR , where he advocated an early switch from film to video. In 1972 Haux was chief cameraman for film coverage of the Olympic Games in Munich . In 1984 he retired from NDR. In 1990 he received the German Camera Prize .

Film as a hobby

From 1965 to 1972, Haux was also the author and editor of the television series Film als Hobby , in which he and Max Rendez (who at the time was the Berlin Regional Director of the Association of German Film Amateurs (BDFA)) presented 59 programs submitted by film amateurs to television viewers discussed. This series then culminated in a 14-part television course in 1980, film as a hobby , in which the cutting, compilation and dubbing of 8 mm amateur film was demonstrated and for which advice literature was also published under the name of Haux and Rendez. In keeping with the series, records with music and noises for dubbing were also released under her name. In 1973 he also produced a whole series of reports on gardening and gardening in the frowned upon 8 mm film format, for which a series of advice was also published.

This was followed by a series of programs entitled Photo as a Hobby , in which Haux provided tips on image design and recording technology, among other things. With the idea of ​​a video series as a hobby , he was not able to assert himself at the time. "Video" was initially dismissed as "children's stuff" by television producers. At the end of 1980, three programs of 45 minutes each were broadcast, which were put together from award-winning video contributions by amateur filmmakers. The programs were advertised as viewers making programs and can therefore be seen as an early example of public television .
