Jan Van Cauwelaert
Jan Van Cauwelaert CICM (born April 12, 1914 in Antwerp , Belgium , † August 18, 2016 in Jette ) was a Belgian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of the Inongo diocese in the Congo .
Life
Jan Van Cauwelaert, son of the psychology professor, Lord Mayor of Antwerp and Belgian Minister of State Frans Van Cauwelaert , joined the religious order of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary ( Scheut missionaries ) and was ordained a priest on August 6, 1939 . His Order then sent him to the mission in the Belgian Congo colony .
On January 6, 1954 he was by Pope Pius XII. Appointed Titular Bishop of Metropolis in Asia and Apostolic Vicar of the newly founded Vicariate Inongo , a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Kinshasa in what was then the Belgian Congo . He was ordained bishop by Jozef-Ernest Cardinal Van Roey , Archbishop of Mechelen , on March 25 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Louis Morel CICM, Archbishop of Suiyüan (today Hohhot ) in China, and Paul Constant Schoenmaekers , Auxiliary Bishop in Mechelen.
After elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate to the diocese on November 10, 1959 he was by Pope John XXIII. appointed its bishop. As a representative of Africa he participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council and was a member of the Congregation for the Order of the Sacraments .
With the resignation from office Jan Van Cauwelaert was on June 12, 1967 by Paul VI. appointed titular bishop of Uccula . He was then rector of the religious college of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Rome. Among other things, he was Vice President of Pax Christi . Due to the changed allocation guidelines, he renounced his titular seat on October 12, 1976.
Since the death of the Slovak bishop Ján Chryzostom Korec on October 24, 2015, Van Cauwelaert has been the longest-serving Roman Catholic bishop in the world by ordination date.
